Coconut Lime Lotion Bars
On my fourth try this week, these Coconut Lime Lotion Bars finally came out the way I wanted them to. I am really craving anything that reminds me of sun and warmth, and since I go through a lot of moisturizers right now, with cold weather and pregnancy, I figured my lotion bars are something I should modify to help me with that summer longing.
Ideally, these lotion bars would be best with odorless beeswax and refined shea butter since those particular ingredients add a lot of heavy smell. I know that a lot of ‘purists’ would say that it’s best to use all things unrefined but I think – why make yourself suffer and wind up going back to store bought stuff full of chemicals because the natural smell gets old very quickly. Shea fragrance goes away fairly quickly though; and since with of all my recent experiments I just ran out of this stuff that I get at Whole Foods, I used raw shea butter from Rose Mountain Herbs that I have a big stash of. Lime is the predominant fragrance here, and adding peppermint oil really helps to get that freshness I wanted. I picked up a package of these super cute favor boxes from Joann’s Fabrics that fit 2 or 3 of the lotion hearts perfectly. Wrap them in pastry or tissue paper to make a simple and pretty little gift.
I use a Pyrex measuring cup to melt the ingredients to save one extra step of using a water bath; just melt and pour.

HOW TO MAKE COCONUT LIME LOTION BARS
Ingredients
1/3 cup odorless beeswax (this is the best deal by far, plus you can use 40% off coupon, Walmart also carries this brand)
1/3 cup virgin coconut oil (best deal is at Costco)
1/4 cup ghee (how to make ghee; or buy at Indian or health food stores)
1/4 cup shea butter (I get this kind; also my local ethnic store sells it cheap), but odorless shea is preferred!
1 tablespoon almond oil
1/2 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon coconut solid perfume (like this)
5 drops of peppermint essential oil
10-15 drops of lime essential oil
Equipment
One quart Pyrex glass measuring cup (I love this) or something along those lines
Measuring cups and spoons
Small pot that fits a Pyrex cup
Spoon for mixing
Silicon mold (I use this)
Instructions
Pour about 2 inches of water in a small pot.
Put all ingredients, except for solid perfume and essential oils, in the Pyrex bowl, and place in the pot.
Turn heat on low and let ingredients melt completely.
Remove from heat; add solid perfume and essential oils.
Pour into the silicon mold (I got 10.5 hearts from this batch).
Cool lotion bars completely before removing from the mold.
Cleanup
After the oils solidified on your measuring cup and spoon, wipe them with a paper towel, rinse with hot water and soap, and put in the dishwasher.
