Everyone seems to be on board of Acai train these days, including truly yours. But recently I discovered Aronia berries and that’s how Aronia Acai Smoothie came to my ‘vitamin’ rotation.

WHAT IS ARONIA BERRY

Aronia berry is a fruit of a delicious shrub also known as chokeberry. It is native to North America and is often used in landscaping in US. The berries can be eaten raw, but they do have astringent qualities that make mouth pucker.

ARONIA IS HIGHER IN ANTIOXIDANTS THAN ANY OTHER PLANT MEASURED TO DATE

Who would have thought that we can look in our back yard and find an amazing superfood. Aronia berry’s dark (almost black) color is due to high content of anthocyanins, which are compounds that protect us from free radical damage and inflammation.

  • Beneficial for those with diabetes to reduce inflammation caused by oxidative stress (source)
  • Aids in weight management (source)
  • Shows promise in cancer treatment (source)
  • And so much more! (source)

HOW TO MAKE ARONIA ACAI SMOOTHIE

Ingredients

100g (3.5oz) acai puree frozen (1 pouch)
1/2 cup aronia berries, frozen (I get mine at Whole Foods, but they sell it on Amazon too)
1 ripe banana
1 teaspoon chia seeds

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a blender, process until smooth.

Notes

  • I bring Acai and Aronia berries to room temperature because I prefer my smoothies non-frozen.
  • I love dragon fruit with this smoothie bowl, the textures go really well together.
